TALE OF THE BACKYARDERS

Atex Steel began life in Geelong as Atex Steel Garages, an outfit run by Joe Pelizzeri handling small projects such as small garages and tilt-a-doors. Just down the street Gregorr Popp, a welder with an interest in steel-frame boat building, had a fledging business weldind and constructing steel sheds and garages. A friendship developed and they agreed to help each other out.

In 1979 their first job collaborating toghether was manufacturing a concrete panel carrying tailer for the Animal Health Laboratory. A bigger competitor phoned them up and abused them, calling them 'backyarders', but both the job and the friendship were succeses. After a time of co-existing and collaborating, in 1981 they set up an arrangement which brought their bussiness toghether as ATEX  STEEL PTY. LTD.

Soon after, Hatwell Builders contracted these backyard boys to manufacture and construct all the steel work for  their Church Street building in Geelong. While it became their first major project as a new company, it certainly was not their last. Atex Steel has steadily earned its reputation as a solid, no-nonsense fabricator and builder of quality steel products in Geelong and throughout Victoria.
